Old Skull Skateboards wanted to ask if any of you have ever heard of the Legend of Pancho Deligamo? We have heard of this on several occasions and think that we recently spotted him in Rochester, NY. The first sighting of him is believed to have been in 1991 at a Skate Spot somewhere in the State of New York. He came out of nowhere and started skating with all the local skaters and just shredded and ripped the spot like it has never been ripped since....he was amazing...he Skated better than most pros at the time and was doing tricks no one saw until the next year when the Plan B Questionable Video came out and blew minds in 1992. He didn't talk much, he just kinda spurted out a few things here and there and gave some of the kids some quick advice on how to help them out with learning some tricks. He dressed like any other skater from that era and had a skateboard with "Experimental" written accross the bottom with no other graphic. He had a Slurpee from 7-Eleven with him and one of the extra hot, extra large Slim Jims that Macho Man Randy Savage use to promote. He always has a Slurpee and a Slim Jim with him as the story goes..The only thing that was unusual about him other than his amazing tricks was the fact that he wore a black eye mask like the one that the Lone Ranger had. It was around Holloween at the time so the kids didn't think it was too weird but he never took it off the whole time he skated with those kids....He said his name was Pancho Deligamo...... then he said he had to leave...all he said as he skated away was that there was a huge change coming.......The kids had no clue what that ment and they started telling all their friends about their adventure....several other sightings played out exactly like that accross the Country and he even was offered sposorships on the fly at Skateparks but he turned them down and seemed to disappear after he received too much fanfare in one location always making sure the last thing he said was that there was huge change coming.
After several sightings the Plan B Questionable video came out and everything in Skateboarding changed...no more wide boards, big pants were in, small wheels and flip tricks progressed at a rappid pace. Once that video came out and Old School Skating became New School in 1992, Pacho Deligamo stopped leaving events saying that there was a big change coming. He apparently saw where Skateboarding was headed before anyone else did.
Several rumors have been spread about who Pancho Deligamo is......some believe he is an excentric Pro Skater that gets away with showing up at random Skatespots by taking on another persona and wearing an eye mask.....those people have never actually seen him though..they only hear about him passing through...the ones who have actually met him truly believe that all the bits and pieces of his story are true. It is believed that he could possibly be the son of the infamous Animal Chin from the Powell Peralta Video "The Search for Animal Chin" Some people think that it is crazy and that Animal Chin is ficticious, while other true skaters know that as long as Skaters Search for Animal Chin...they have found him......
Pancho Deligamo has been seen leaving Skate Spots in an Old Early 1980's Chevy Conversion Van....it is painted blue with a custom Unicorn mural on the side......the van leaves each spot blasting tunes from the Seventies... most of the time kids say it is Nazareth's Hair of the Dog that he rocks out to most frequently....he appears to travel constantly because there are sightings of him all over...he has told people that he gets by selling Panchos at Festivals all over the place....the weird thing is that a kid asked him if he wears the eye mask even when he sells his Ponchos and he said no......a lot of hardcore skaters look for him at local festivals in their towns hoping to find him unmasked......
Over the years the sightings have became less frequent accros the Country but he usually shows up at least a few spots or skateparks a year shredding with that Old School meets New School style and still amazing....he helps kids out with some tricks and as soon as people start making a big deal about his mask and his sick style he cruises away.....
All of us at Old Skull are intriuged by all these stories that we have heard of the Legend of Pancho Deligamo....is he real? , is he some pro skater with an alter ego or is he the badass skater that turned down every chance of getting sponsored because all he wanted to do was skate....he sounds like his very skills tortured him.....he can't seem to skate without being gawked at...maybe that's why he started wearing that mask.....look twice if you see a guy with a Slurpee and a Slim Jim at your local skate spot, skatepark or skateshop.....it could be him...but if you see a guy with that mask on sporting a Slurpee and a Slim Jim....I suggest maybe we should just let him skate without all the hasling.....let us know if you have a story about the Legend of Pancho Deligamo......
