actually i take back my response,( i was working on no sleep and it was 7 am) well fuck it. im just gonna write what i think. to the media skateboarding is a sport. to myself and most skaters skateboarding is an art, a way to express ones self and a lifestyle. Skateboarding is Skateboarding theres no other word to describe it or classify it other then its own name.
No skateboarding is not a sport.Skateboarding is more of an expression of yourself, an art form, a spiritual feeling between you and your board; a way of life. You completely change yourself when you skate, you see things differently, you start to wear different clothes (because it fits, its more comfortable that way) You dont worry about your shoes and getting them dirty, now you buy shoes just to mess them up. Life changes when you begin to skate. I cant think of any other "sport" that makes you feel so accomplished and proud when you land a trick you've been trying for so long. Its like the best feeling in the world. Im an adventurer myself, always have been, always will. Skateboarding takes you on adventures, so I always knew that I was bound to skate one day. Skatin is an adventurer's life. Its that need to want to wander the streets, it can fill the void for an unappreciated man, who works day in and day out at an office and hates his routine life. Skateboarding keeps you young, and you need that sometimes when it seems hard to wake up in the morning and your old bones tell you not to do it anymore, why bother, they say, but you do it. And you continue to do it until time takes its toll, and you have to start listening. But atleast you know, you had it with you, for this long. So if theres something that lasts until that time when its necessary to stop, how could it be called a sport?
wowo amber. that is almost word for word how i feel. i basically asked that question for a blog i'm doing on friday(oh yeah i post a blog everyfriday in the whatevs part of the fourm...so if you want check it out. it usually has some thing to do with skateboarding) seeing how many people on this site think skating is a sport(not that theres anything wrong with that) and how many feel like you and i do about it. Yes it does keep you young! i can say that because i'm 29 and still get carded for r rated movies. I relate it to the way surfers feel about the connection to the ocean when they surf.I can feel a connection to my board, to the asphalt, to looking for new territory, and loving every fall as much as landing a trick. I've told people before that i can go skate (usually when i'm filming :) ) and not land anything and still have the best day ever because of how much fun it is to challenge myself and the anticipation of getting it that next time. I find after i have a hectic, boring day at work, or just a bad day in general i can go skate and it all melts away and im smiling in seconds (maybe mili-seconds) getting stoked on all the kids around me killing it or me killing it, the conversations, the blending of all types of personalities and yelling when you see the kid land that trick hes been trying all day. I don't know what i'd do with out skateboarding in my life. it balances me. thanks for you well though out and inciteful response. it is nice to know there are like minded people out the ...not to sound sexist(cause i'm not at all) it's even better coming from a woman cause a lot of dudes think its a sport.....good for you roll frever..remember all we got is us in this..unity peace and skateboarding
awww geez. thats probably one of the best compliments ive ever been given, I already know that, but still. haha, just kidding. thank you for that pal. :)
not a problem. thats one of those natalie portman/zack braff garden state moments...bask in your individuality...because nothing is worse than being a clone!
