This week on freaked our Fridays…..IS BAM MARGERA A SELL OUT? How many of you remember CKY?(Camp Kill Yourself) the old landspeed wheels videos. These videos were really funny. I thought Bam and his boys were creative and put a twist on your normal skate videos. A twist mimicked by a lot of other companies since then. Did you know Bam put up his own money to finance the making, editing and mass producing of the first CKY videos? This is the incarnation of what turned into Jackass on MTV. When this show came out I thought it was really funny, I’m from the east coast so Bam on the show was right on, and from time to time there was actually skateboarding on the show. Then that show spawned Wildboyz (which I never watched) and Viva la Bam. This was kind of a continuation of jackass. This brings me to the point . Is Bam a sell-out? Now, let’s wax-intellectual about this. He is a skateboarder. He is ONE of us. He says it in the theme song for the show. So, by common logic, he has brought skateboarding to the American household and maybe some people that have never seen skateboarding or don’t know anything about it. Now, is he the best example of skateboarding culture? Does he represent us properly? Is he still out there filming and making video parts? Is he still promoting the companies he represents? These are the questions I ask when looking to call someone a sellout. Not the fact that he has his own show(s), or has his name on everything , or that he has more money at 30 than most will ever accumulate in their lifetime. The same can be said for Robbie Dyrdek. Funny though, he is doing the same thing that Bam did and no one is calling him a sellout. Is it because he is not as successful or marketable? In this industry we like to point fingers and hate on people. “Oh Bam’s got a lambo, he’s a sellout.” Why? Because he had an opportunity to make a lot of money , have a really good time doing it with all his friends, and not to mention having MTV escort, on their dollar, him and his boys around the world. I’d say that he is smart not a sell out! Guys and ladies we have to stop pointing fingers. Be stoked that one of us made it. Try to think about it in these terms, if one of your friends get sponsored, is he a sellout? What if it was your boy that got to that huge level? Remind you,This is your homie, a dude you started skating with, kick it with, shoot, held his hair when he’s puking face off. Would he be a sellout? ……I think all of you crying sellout….. sound a lot more like jealousy to me.

now these are my opinons.....I'm interested in what ALL of you have to say.

the obvious answer to this is yes. anyone who goes to do something for more money is a sellout. Bam, Drydek, Koston, sheckler, the list goes on forever. they all left for more money. but being a sellout isnt nesisarily a bad thing. obviously ( lets use koston for example) if he stayed on lakai instead of nike in my opinion that would be better. but its something we would all do. if monster or nike or mountin dew wanted to pay you a million dolers to skate obviously you would do it. your a sellout but you would still do it. if Bam wasnt part of MTV and was just skating like the rest of the kids out there it would be sick but everyone wants to pay the bills and not work at mcdonalds when they cant skate anymore

so, by your thinking, anyone who gets paid for skateboarding is a sellout. They are switching from being a "free agent" to being paid by a company to ride for them and represent them, so they are "selling out for more money".
Fuck that, without professionals, this site wouldn't be here, you and I probably wouldn't even be skating, there would be no videos, there would be no magazines other than local ones, and probably not even that.
Truth is, little man, when you move away from mom and dad, shit costs money. ALOT of money. You can pretty much count on around $800 bucks a month MINIMUM in bills, just to survive on your own. It is hard as fuck just to get by in this world, and people need to take advantage of the great opportunities they get in order to make enough money to actually be comfortable, instead of just making enough to get by.

P.S. Koston left Lakai so other people on the team could make more money. he made the move to Nike to help his team and homies out.

You have an interesting opinion. In one way i can totally agree with you. I think Loyalty is very important and money should not motivate you.On the other hand you need money to survive in this world. So its like a double egde sword.
thanks for the reply homie. roll forever.

The reason I don't like Bam is because he's not competitive , on the level anymore. He Hasn't had a GOOD video part in the longest time.If he was discovered today he wouldn't even make the cut for the am team. He may still rip & skate hard but any of the ams on Element are way better than him. He is milking his pro status with a marketable name, Thats weak both on him & Element.
Also I think this is a wasted topic on freaked out fridays. c'mon John there is way more interesting & relevant topics than Bam.

point taken. I just heard some kids talking about this the other day. In my defense, I thought the topic of selling out was, at least a little relevant. I also used Bam simpley because he was the most obvious choice. But point taken. thanks for the reply homie. I will work up a better topic for this week. thanks for the input as well.

No he isn't, Sell out is a term originally used for musicians for when they change the sound of their music for more popular appeal. Bam still skates the ways he always has, and probably just as often, and I'm sure he can still rip a park with the best of them. He just made some clever business moves and ended up with millions of dollars.

He's only the 13th person ever to do the loop

word. I agree with you. He's got a lot of money and probably doesn't have to work anymore, so he can skate all the time now. and yes he can rip parks with the best of them. thanks for the reply homie. roll forever.

I think this is a clear cut case of people judging him by his fan base and not by his own love for skateboarding. Sure, it's pretty much a proven fact that a lot of his fan base is extremely lame, but I don't have a problem with Bam at all. To me, he listens to shitty (for the most part) music and does stupid shit, but you can definitely tell he loves skateboarding just by watching him kill FDR or his own insane skatepark. He does some pretty intense tricks in his TIME part, seriously.
